UP AI CORE X is a complete product line of neural network accelerators for edge devices. Whether the automation you are creating is for identifying and tallying items in a shopping cart, alerting airport security to unattended luggage, or monitoring traffic congestion ahead of an autonomous vehicle, the AI CORE X let’s you embed the real-time computational power you need directly where you need it.
Cloud computing is great for many things, but not for real-time edge applications with tight latency, bandwidth, security, and reliability constraints. Sometimes, the only solution is to co-locate the processing of data with the collection of data. This means no cloud computing. Thankfully, the skies are clearing. With up to four trillion operations per second (TOPS) and a Neural Compute Engine capable of delivering up to one TOPS, all with just a few watts of power, AI CORE X is perfect for doing the heavy lifting in any edge application.
The AI CORE X is powered by the recently released Intel® Movidius™ Myriad™ X, a third-generation vision processing unit (VPU) that is the first in its class to include a Neural Compute Engine — a dedicated hardware accelerator for deep neural networks, trainable with industry-standard tools.
AI CORE X is available with one or two Myriad X chips in a variety of form factors. With your choice of MiniCard/mPCIe, M.2 2230, M.2 2242, M.2 2280, or a custom form factor, embedding deep learning capabilities has never been easier.

UP is a brand owned by AAEON Europe, which is one of the ASUS group’s associated companies. In the past, we’ve successfully manufactured and delivered products very similar to the AI CORE X, including its predecessor UP products. Production of AI CORE X will be carried out at our AAEON Technology headquarters in Taiwan, which has produced UP board, UP Squared, UP Core, UP Core Plus, and UP AI Edge for us. We are confident in the mass manufacturing process once the design is finalized.

We have been working with the Intel Movidius chips since the Myriad 2 generation, and we have accumulated a lot of experience with their different hardware design options. We already have a couple of engineering samples in mPCIe and M.2 2280 form factors, and we should be able to quickly complete the remaining AI CORE X hardware design.
The AI CORE X design will benefit greatly from what we learned from working with the Myriad 2, especially when it comes to the thermal design. The chip itself consumes 3 watts of power, and we have to give it a proper heatsink to dissipate the heat and avoid throttling. That’s why we decided to include an active fan on the AI CORE XM2 2280 and Vision Plus X. We believe we are going to spend some time in thermal optimization in this project.
The development software is also a key. Intel will upgrade its OpenVINO toolkit to support Myriad X and UP team is working closely with Intel to fully test our platform with their software. The release date of the updated OpenVINO toolkit will also impact the release date of AI Core X series.
