Location tracking is one of the most prevalent applications of IoT devices. One way to determine asset location is to utilize Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data such as GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BEIDOU. Understanding precisely how GNSS works and designing efficient hardware during the product development cycle can minimize power consumption, decrease battery requirements, and reduce the overall product form factor, all of which decrease material needs and BOM costs. I will walk you through GNSS basics, IoT modules available today, and an overview of some peripheral components such as SAW filters, low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), notch circuits, and matching pi filters. After this presentation, you will be able to speak more proficiently about GNSS and have greater confidence in analyzing the efficiency of various designs.
