Why should BJTs get all the credit?

This is the question Ladyada (a.k.a., Limor Fried of Adafruit) asked me (as guest of Open Music Labs) back in 2003. Horowitz and Hill had introduced the world to Transistor Man, and we made shirts for our friends with him on the front and the 741 op-amp guts on the back. "Thanks Transistor man!"

But where are the thanks for Mosfet girl? There are far more MOSFETs in the world compared to BJTs. Trillions of Mosfet girls worldwide keep our processors running by maintaining their drain current with respect to the gate voltage. Where’s her shirt?

Supporting local non-profit ChickTech

One of the main goals of the Mosfet girl shirt is to raise awareness of the awesome women who are essential to making our tech go, and to encourage girls to get involved in the next generation of electrical discoveries. To this end, a percentage from every Mosfet girl shirt sale in this campaign will go to ChickTech to support their mission to "engage women, girls, and non-binary individuals of all ages in the technology industry while working to create a better technology culture for all". Any donations made through this campaign (via the ‘Support ChickTech’ pledge) will also be donated to ChickTech.

And, as is true with every Open Music Labs venture, after the campaign finishes, the work will be made available for anyone to use for private or commercial ventures. We just want to see Mosfet girl out in the world. To this end, the shirts are being sold at cost, and neither Open Music Labs nor Adafruit will receive any money from this campaign.

Why Mosfet and not MOSFET?

Good question! MOSFET is an acronym for Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor, which describes a little bit about how the transistors are made, and how they work. But, in this case, Mosfet is a person’s name, so just the first letter is capitalized. Also, stylistically, the all-caps MOSFET would stick out like a sore thumb on the back.

What’s up with the work-dress and clipboard?

In keeping with the Transistor man parallel (milkman outfit and letter), we wanted a bit of an anachronistic 1940s feel. We tried to envision her as someone who joined the workforce during WWII, akin to Rosie the Riveter, another symbol of female empowerment.

Why Mosfet girl and not woman?

This was a difficult decision, and came down to three reasons:

1. One of the main goals is to appeal to the younger generation, so they can see a place for themselves in electrical engineering and computer science.
2. This is the original name as Ada conceived it, so it sort of just stuck.
3. Girl was preferred over woman by the female engineers we asked.
