FPGA Shortage and Influence to the Campaign

by Piret Uustal

Dear backers,

After a few months of silence we are back with some updates. The situation has been evolving, but the latest news isn’t what we were hoping for. We have collected information about the situation on the chip market from our FPGA chip distributor and from some web Intel forum regarding the FPGA chips and the situation is as following: due to supply chain challenges, Intel has placed the part-number 10M08DAF256C8G on allocation to fulfill government contracts, Intel strategic strategic accounts, and for Intel internal production. Hence, according to the source, all normal deliveries are expected to resume in 2024.

All the rest of the components (Breadboards, Jumper cables, JTAG adapters, USB Blaster programming devices) have been stocked and we also have all the PCB ready for the assembly, but without the FPGA chip, we are not in the condition to finalize the assembly of KRYPTOR boards until the FPGA chips become available again.

To ensure the best results once we will resume the assembly, all PCB’s have been baked and put under vacuum plastic bags waiting to be completed with the installation of all components.

Meanwhile, we have also been evaluating other FPGA chip options, but they are very limited, as the availability of FPGA chips in general is still very scarce and not fluid on the market. The shortage is affecting all the MAX10 family chips, which prevents us from trying to replace the 10M08 with a pin compatible one.

While continuing to look for alternative solutions, rest assured, we will resume the assembly and delivery of the KRYPTOR once the chip will be back on the market. Thank you for your understanding and patience but now the final production step is out of our control.
