Project update 9 of 11

New batch shipping soon

by David Z

Hello all,

As mentioned in the last project update, we were having some e-paper panels supply issues. Considering the current market situation and shortage of virtually everything, it’s not very surprising. Still, we were continually doing our best to find possible sources for the missing part. There was little luck, since this is a recycled part and the process of recycling is really slow and tricky (more about that in this update).

The supplier has secured new panels for us in April and flex cables soon after. As he communicated to us, the main problem was attaching the flex cables to the panels. His process was not good enough, so he outsourced it - and that took months. Meanwhile, we were trying to find panels elsewhere - unsuccessfully. Just recently, we have received the confirmation that the panels are finally ready and can be picked up. We are sorry for this confusion, as it was totally out of our hands, all we could do was wait for this news.

So, why is it so trickly to solder the flex cable to the e-paper screen? Simply put, it super-small and has a lot of pins. We took some photos of it under the microscope, take a look below. Along the whole side of the screen are these pins which all need to be properly soldered.

So, when do we expect to ship? If everything goes as planned from this point, you should have Inkplate 10 in your hands by end of the August. There should be some left for the future orders available from Crowd Supply and Mouser, too.

Big thanks to all backers for their patience - we appreciate it. For all future Inkplate launches, we will do our best to avoid this kind of delay. Good news is, 6PLUS parts and e-paper panels are secured and we expect no delays there.
