Open Licenses
See the next update for important changes to the below licensing scheme.
As promised at the beginning of the campaign, here is an update on the licensing of ORWL. Because there are a lot of pieces to ORWL, both hardware and software, there are many things to consider when choosing licensing. Here’s where we’ve landed:
- PCB Schematics
- All schematics will be available in a rendered format (e.g., PDF) under CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0.
- The full project files (e.g., Cadence) will be available under an NDA with Design SHIFT.
- PCB Layouts
- All layouts will be available in a rendered format (e.g., Gerber) under CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0.
- The full project files (e.g., Allegro) will be available under an NDA with Design SHIFT.
- Mechanical Design Files
- The full project files (e.g., Pro E) will be available under an NDA with Design SHIFT.
- Firmware
- All firmware written by Design SHIFT will be available under CC-BY-SA 4.0. This includes firmware for the Maxim secure MCU, key fob BTLE, and key fob NFC.
- The Coreboot-based BIOS developed by Eltan will be available under the terms of that agreement.
We feel this is the best balance between protecting the significant investment we’ve already made in ORWL and the legitimate need for the community to inspect and verify the security of ORWL. We’ll be posting links to actual sources in the next week or so once we’ve had a chance to make sure they are all in order.
